Oh, yes, this will get a place of honour on my art book shelf.
The art direction and the exaggerated style, the strong silhouettes, the jagged lines, the asymmetry, have always been my favourite things about this gaming franchise, so I finally had to get myself one of the art books (the first one sadly appears to be out of print, selling for up to 10 times the original price), and I was not to be disappointed. It's cool enough to own the art works and designs that made it into the game and the promotion material on good quality paper, but nothing beats the excitement of being able to take a peek at the creative process behind the art work, and, most importantly all the designs that didn't make the cut (there's a concept of an angel junk pedlar and an alternative design for the Wailing Host that I'm particularly fond of). It's very inspirational. If asked what could have made this art book better -- no! Even more perfect -- I'd have to say: more commentary by the creative team (this section is the slimmest).
More pages featuring the beautiful location backgrounds (they're hardly in this thing). And, in general, more space for some of the sketches that ended up in pretty small scale in this book, which makes them almost useless (time to go hunting for my magnifying glass). However, looking at reviews for the first art book (and how it's too large for its paperback binding), I take it all of these decisions were taken in order to be able to produce a book of decent quality for a comparitively cheap and affordable price, by reducing the number of pages but not the amount of actual content. It's not a bad policy but one that keeps me from awarding the full five stars. (And, damn, I want that first art book so bad now!). Joe Madureira the Creative Studio Director and team has done it again by presenting us with an amazing collection of video game art. It's 224 pages thick, which is thinner than the first artbook.
